How to Make Spider Webs Out of Cotton Balls
Making your own cobwebs is a fun and easy Halloween project. Whether you're hanging them around your home, in doorways, or even using them to decorate cupcakes, cobwebs are a Halloween decorating staple.
Cotton Ball Cobweb
One of the easiest ways to make a cobweb is by using cotton balls or cotton batting. Simply take a cotton ball or chunk of cotton batting and stretch it. You'll need to use something sticky, like hairspray, to keep the stretched out cotton balls together. Continue stretching cotton balls and piecing them together until your web is large enough. For an extra spooky effect, you can dip the stretched cotton in red dye or add a fake spider. When the web is complete, it is ready to hang.
Yarn Cobweb
Another approach is by using white yarn and white pipe cleaners. For this project, you will need three pipe cleaners, scissors, glue and a piece of yarn about a yard long. First you'll form the center of the cobweb. Taking two of the pipe cleaners, make an X, twisting the two together and straightening so they stay attached. Lay the third pipe cleaner across the X, so it resembles an asterisk, twist, and straighten.
Next, take your yarn and begin wrapping it in a spiral pattern along the spokes of the cobweb. To make it more secure, add a drop of glue and wrap the yarn around each spoke as you make your spiral pattern. The glue will keep the yarn from sliding up or down the spoke the cobweb. Continue this pattern around. When your cobweb is done, tie a knot in the yarn at one of the spokes and create a loop in the remainder of the yarn. This loop can then be used to hang the cobweb.
Cobweb Cupcake Topper
Creating cobweb cupcake toppers is another fun and easy way to decorate cupcakes for your Halloween party. All you need is chocolate or white chocolate, a Ziplock bag, and waxed paper.
First melt the chocolate, using a double boiler or the microwave. Be careful to regularly stir the chocolate as it melts, as it can easily become scorched. While the chocolate melts, lay a piece of waxed paper or parchment paper on a cookie sheet. Once the chocolate is melted, spoon or pour it into the Ziplock bag and cut off a corner of the bag: This hole should be very small.
Next, on your waxed paper, slowly draw an X with the chocolate. Pipe a line laying vertically across the X. This forms the base of the cobweb. Carefully pipe the chocolate around each arm of the base in circles, until the cobweb is at the desired size.
Continue this process until the chocolate is gone. Place the cookie sheet in the fridge and allow the cobwebs to chill until you're ready to use them. When party time comes, gently peel the paper away from the cobwebs and place them on your cupcakes.
Creating your own cobwebs for Halloween is a fun and easy project anyone can do. You can also customize your web with different colors of dyes or yarn, or plastic spiders, bats, or even glitter. However you do it, your decorations are sure to look great.
